SZ continues to WOW adoring fans
Thanks to all our fans who came down for our show at the Ace of Clubs. We really appreciate the support you gave us at our early show. We had a wonderful time opening for River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs. After the show we dried off and stayed dancing to the great sounds of RCL and the Hogs who put on their usual great rockin' show. Thanks to the Ace of Clubs for their first Roots happening and we hope to do it again in the near future.
Don't forget this weekend at Glen Echo Park in Bethesda Md. for the first Dancing By the Bayou Festival. We will be opening the show at 11 am sharp and play to 12:15 followed immediately by Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Road Runners. It's gonna be fun. JA and Mary from Tokyo will be there all weekend and ready to dance!!! And the SWB is ready to play. Our set will be one ferocious dance groove after the other. See you on the dance floor!!
Sidewalk Zydeco Looking Forward!
Everybody get ready to rock! Johnny Ace & the Sidewalk Zydeco just scored a major festival gig down in DC. We will be on the same bill as Beausoleil, Nathan Williams and Leroy Thomas, all major touring acts. Further, Johnny Ace had the privilege of sitting in with Curley Taylor again at the TK Club. Along with Chuckie Bush on bass and drums, so he has half of Beau Jocque's old Zydeco band, one of the best Zydeco bands of all time. Beau Jocque invented the modern Zydeco sound and passed away much too young back in about '97. Playing on that stage with his old band and doing some of his tunes was a dream come true for Johnny. With this festival gig and more shows on the horizon, the new year is going to be big for Sidewalk Zydeco. Lastly, Sidewalk Zydeco is in the studio working on the CD so hopefully that will be out soon too!! Yeah you right!!
SZ Summer Recap!
The LSU annual Crawfish Boil was a sellout for the first time in the history of the event. The SZ Band was thrilled to be part of that great day and we are looking forward to doing it again in 2010. We started our show with "Tiger Tailgate Party" and never stopped until the last mudbug was gone!
To all our Metro Alumni friends thanks for your support.
The summer also saw our first trip to DC playing at the historic Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo. Thanks to all of the dancers who supported us at the show. Thanks to you we just got booked at the first Dancing by the Bayou Fall festival, Oct. 17 & 18. This will be a terrific event headllined by Beausoleil, Nathan Willeams and the Zydeco Cha Chas and Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners.
We also played an exciting new venue in Mount Holly NJ, Bar 38 West which features a terrific wood dance floor, Cajun food and a great vibe. Check it out often as it is becoming a regular stop on the NE Crawfish Circuit for travelling La. Bands. We hope to be back there soon too!
September is here and we're back at our favorite venue, Connolly's in NYC for a dance Sun. Sept. 13. We'll be playing some tunes from our forthcoming CD as well as some new hard core Dance Grooves and a waltz or two or three or four. We do hope to see some LSU Metro's so we can do Tiger Tailgate Party and make some noise.
Oct. 10 we'll be back at The Ace of Clubs on Great Jones Street in NYC for a big show with River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs. This is going to be some Saturday night in the City for sure.
Then in Nov. we are back in Kingston on the 13th for our third appearance at White Eagle Hall and really looking forward to that gig. We love the Hall and all the dancers up there.
As we mentioned, we are working on our first CD. It will feature mostly original tunes with some surprised too so keep checking the blog for an announcment about our CD release party.
As some of you have no doubt noticed at our shows, Mary from Tokyo is temporarily out of commission with a torn rotator cuff. Surgerywas successful and she is into her rehab. While she is mending we have been blessed with some fabulous guest scrubbers including Rubboard Pete, Maggie, Philly Donna, Robin, and Roxanne.
Now it is off to Ninigret for the big party to end the Summer. See you on the dance floor!
Another awesome Zydeco party!!
On July 12th, 2009 -- Sidewalk Zydeco, once again, took the stage & proceeded to lay down the boogie for an avid crowd of dancers! Great times were had by all, and luckily, visual evidence was captured by a fine photographer! Take a look at the amazing pics!! click for photo gallery!
SZ to HEADLINE LSU Alumni Zydeco Blast!
Geaux Tigers. The New York Metro Chapter of the LSU Alumni Assoc. has just selected Sidewalk Zydeco to headline their Annual Crawfish Boil to be held this year on Sat. May 30 on the Chelsea Piers at 26th Street. This will be the best party this side of Baton Rouge with 2000 pounds of mudbugs, with all the fixings, Jambalaya, 16 kegs of assorted Abita Beer and live Zydeco music. We'll be rockin' it Tiger Tailgait Party style with no breaks and as much music as we can fit in, Yea U Right. This is an open event so you don't have to be an LSU Alum to get in. Tickets are $60 in advance through their website or $80 at the door. This is a rain or shine event under a covered venue with an open bar in addition to the included beer and wine. You will have a great time at this Mudbug party I guarantee, and don't forget, as always, Mary from Tokyo will have her extra frottoirs available so please do come up on stage with us and scrub awhile. Mike has already requested "Jolie Blon" so rest assured we will be playing the Cajun National Anthem as well as "Tiger Tailgate Party", "Vibrator", "Butt Thing" and all the latest Zydeco straight out of Lafayette, Lake Charles and Houston. Here is a link to their website with all the info you'll need to order your tickets. See you on the 30th! click for more info!
Sidewalk Zydeco makes The New Yorker!
"The New Yorker" magazine chose to highlight our show this Sat. Night, April 18 at Connolly's in the new issue. We are thrilled to say the least. Also included in the issue is a special pull out advertisement for this year's Festival International de Louisiane so it is really special. This is not only great for Zydeco music generally but good for all the La. bands that make the long trip up to the Northeast to share their music with us. Hopefully they can finally get the recognition they deserve from the music scene.

Mardi Gras 2009 was a Smash!
Mardi Gras season 2009 is now just a memory, but what great memories they were for the SZ band and their fans. We started out playing for all the North Jersey jam band party people at the Donegal Saloon in Kearny NJ on Feb. 6. We were pleased to see many of the New York dance crowd come out too and really enjoy the great dance floor and cool vibe that the Donegal provides. It was also close to Johnny's birthday and the club came through with a beautiful surprise cake that forced the band to take a short break so Johnny could blow out all the candles. (lots of 'em, yeah U right!).
Mardi Gras night, Feb. 24 saw the band at the Ace of Clubs in NYC which is the downstairs of the Acme Grill. Mardi Gras at the Acme is legendary and this year was off the hook. This was the Ace's annual no cover Mardi Gras bash and the band was thrilled to be selected to host the festivities. We hit the stage at 7:30 and went until about 11 pm keeping the dance floor packed and the club hopping. The Acme is known for their Hurricanes and they didn't dissappoint. Bloomberg News picked up on the show as did Time Out NY magazine. We also debuted Joe Bataan's (Mr. New York City himself) old Boogaloo hit "Subway Joe" done Zydeco style that will be on our new CD. Helping out throwing beads and keeping it Louisiana all the way was Kristin and her Krewe from Thibodaux La. (up near Shreveport) so we want to give a big merci bien to them for keeping the vibe over the top all night.
Down in La. come midnight on Mardi Gras day the festivities officially end and Ash Wednesday begins lent. Not so here in the Northeast. We get to continue Mardi Gras a little longer! We played Le Bon Temps Restaurant in Philly for the St. Bernard Project (www.stbernardproject.org) annual fundraiser aiding Katrina relief and rebuilding in New Orleans. Thanks to the generosity of all who attended we raised over $6,000 which is half of what is needed to build a house there. Added to the $4000 raised in D.C. and the amount raised in NY the project was able to send one more family home to a new house. The SZ band had the place jumping and the floor shaking. A great time was had, we made lots of new friends and got back home just before the worst of the snowstorm rolled into the Northeast.
Finally we did one more Mardi Gras show to benefit the Broadway Training Center located in Hastings-on-Hudson saturday night Mar. 7. Again we had a great crowd and the NY dancers who came out to show their support were able to really enjoy the wonderful wooden dance floor. Lots of new fans joined the SZ Band Krewe and new dancers were treated to a super dance lesson taught by Laura and Jeremy Rice of Somebody Scream Productions,NY ( http://cajunzydeco.net/SS/ ) At the break we were all mesmerized by the performance by the BTC students who showed that they are all ready for Broadway NOW! Just to emphasize how great they were, they all hit the floor for our version of "The Cupid Shuffle" and their enthusiasm and rhythm were so infectious that everyone was on the floor shuffling up a storm.
The band is really looking forward to our show on friday night in Kingston NY for the Hudson Valley dancers at White Eagle Hall. This will be our second time up there and we want to thank all the dancers who supported us last time and especially Jesse Lege who came out to discover that Johnny Ace was his old student!!! (Thanks for the lessons!!) We've got some new tunes for all including our version of "Follow Me Down" by Brad Randell with a little different twist.
Finally we will be back at Connolly's for a rare Saturday night Zydeco show on April 18, thanks to Laura Selikson and Let's Zydeco NY. ( http://letszydeco.com/ ) who has been a real believer and supporter of the band. We are absolutely thrilled to be back at Klub 47 for a big Saturday night Zydeco Dance and we'll have all the stops pulled out for sure.
Don't forget to stop by and say hi at one of our shows and don't forget Mary from Tokyo always has an extra board or two for all you scrubbers.

Sidewalk Zydeco ROCKS the Hudson Valley!
Johnny Ace and Sidewalk Zydeco had a blast playing for all the Hudson Valley dancers at White Eagle Hall Friday night on Nov. 14. Johnny and the band were soaking wet at the end of the show so by the "gonna make you sweat" meter, it was a killer show. Thanks to all the dancers for gettin' it on to our Zydeco.
We are really looking forward to the next gig at Connolly's Holiday show on Dec. 14. We are planning on rolling out our version of the "Cupid Shuffle" for all to enjoy. You can shuffle or Zydeco to it.
